How to build a B2B SEO content strategy when search volume is tiny
In a specialist B2B market, the highest-volume keyword in your category might get 300 searches a month, and half of them are students and competitors. Traffic-led strategy fails here. Committee-led strategy works.
Start with who signs off
A meaningful B2B purchase involves several people, each searching for something different at the same moment.
| Role | What they search | Page that answers it |
|---|---|---|
| Technical evaluator | Specifications, compliance, integration detail | Documentation-grade spec page |
| Finance | Cost, payback period, total cost of ownership | Pricing logic and ROI explainer |
| Procurement | Vendor comparisons and alternatives | Honest comparison page |
| End user | How the job gets done today | Practical how-to guide |
Four pages, one deal. None of them will show impressive volume in a keyword tool, and all of them appear in the research path of a purchase worth more than a year of blog traffic.
Choose the page type before the keyword
Read the current results page for the term. If it returns comparison pages, a blog post will not rank no matter how good it is. Match the format search engines have already decided the intent deserves.
Write comparison pages honestly
Comparison and alternatives pages convert better than almost anything else, and they only work if a reader can tell you are being straight. State plainly which customer each competitor suits better. Buyers can smell a rigged table, and so can the people who would otherwise link to you.
Publish what only you can publish
- Original benchmark data from your own operations, published annually
- Calculators that do a real job the buyer would otherwise do in a spreadsheet
- Teardowns of real projects, with the constraints and trade-offs included
- Regulatory or standards explainers kept genuinely current
Measure the right thing
Sessions are not the metric. Track assisted pipeline: which pages appear in the journeys of accounts that entered the CRM, and which entry pages produced enquiries that sales accepted. Feed that back from the CRM monthly, and let it decide the next quarter's content.
Expect a slow, durable curve
Low-volume B2B SEO does not spike. It compounds. The first two quarters look unimpressive on a traffic chart and often produce the first attributable deals, which is the only chart that matters.
